My journey in IST through technology

reflecting...

This entire portfolio was a long journey. With weeks and weeks of coding and compiling this portfolio, I have learnt so much. Although as a class we coded last year, I felt like this year I really started to understand how to code. I gained a better understanding of each variable and parameter included in the different functions. I was able to use new functions that I never had the chance to. This project not only focused on improving our coding skills but also our creativity. Using the code given, I could experiment and modify the exercises. Some exercises I made small changes like colour and size whilst others I added codes that I had previously used. We were given time to make this one code ours by adding our little touches. As I went along modifying the code, I added comments to the side to keep track of all the changes I had made. Besides coding, we learnt about putting together a website. Even though I used Wix to create websites for other classes, this is by far my favourite. Starting out with a template, I modified it to suit me and this project. I love the layout and aesthetics of my website. It’s simple but highlights important items. I improved my website making skills. I learnt how to add videos to Wix, which I had never done before, and learnt about anchors. Anchors are invisible on your live site but you can link to them from any place on your site. I used anchors on my functions list so that viewers can click on the functions mentioned in my explanation of the exercise and learn more about them.

I really loved how we are able to display all of our work throughout this semester. From the kite project to coding, we can show all of our hard work. I enjoyed the creative side of this project where we were able to design our own website and experiment with changing the code to see what would happen. Although playing around with the code is one of the best parts of the project, it was also frustrating at times when the code didn’t work and you had to figure out how to fix it and change it so that it accomplishes what you want it to. This made the coding process long and frustrating but the satisfaction from the code finally working with all your modifications was definitely worth it.

Something that I thought worked well was how this project was organised. We were able to slowly add to our portfolios as the classes went along without worrying about a due date. Nothing was too last minute because all the exercises were nicely spaced out. It wasn’t like this huge pressure to complete this giant project that was just given to us.

Next time I want to create more drastic changes to the code and step outside my comfort zone. I started with very small modifications but the more codes we did, the more drastic my changes became. Next time, I hope that I try adding codes that I have never used and try something new.
